Air LAN – TAM merger: The decision can take up to several months

Chile’s daily newspaper La Tercera has reported that the merger between Air LAN and Brazilian carrier TAM airline has been suspended by Chile’s top antitrust authorities. According to the paper, five members of the court for the Defense of free Competition have mutually expressed their agreement to suspend the TAM and LAN merger while they will determine whether it complies with antitrust regulations of the country.

land-and-tam-air-logosLa Tercera states that this action is motivated by a petition submitted by the private National Consumer Cooperation and the decision was announced on last friday.

Once the merger is approved, it is expected that the new company, named Latam Airline Group would be one of the world’s 10 largest airlines, providing both passenger and cargo services to more than 115 destinations in 23 countries. At present, Air Tam dominates the International air traffic marker in Brazil, and is among the first choice carriers to book direct flights to Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and Sao Paulo, whereas the Chilean airline, Air LAN offers flights to South America, North America, Europe as well as Oceana. Its most popular routes include flights to Cancun, Mexico.
